Alimak hoists help restore the Eiffel tower

Eiffel Tower, Paris, France

Alimak hoists were seen by millions when used in the renovation of the classical monument in 1983. Thousands of tons of iron had to be removed and the crucial problem was, that during the restoration period, the tower had to be open to visitors. In the 1990s it was time for further renovations, and more assistance from Alimak Hek.

The Grand Old Lady in Paris has undergone a health control. It confirmed that the tower was in good shape, but needed a rejuvenation treatment. To stay young, it must lose some weight – a few thousand tons. Then it must be strengthened by reinforcing some of its limbs. And finally be provided with new veins by replacing the elevators between the second and the third floor. The problem is that during all this time the tower must be in full activity: the incessant stream of visitors must continue to circulate between the floors.

It was necessary to find an independent means of transport for material and passengers. Difficult, very difficult because from the ground to the first floor there is nothing but air under the vault, thus no points of fixation. The solution came from Alimak Hek, pioneer and world leader in rack & pinion access solutions.

In record time – 5 days – Alimak Hek installed a crane tower in sections 2 x 2 m with a ballast at the foot consisting of a 200 ton concrete block. The tower was tied about 4 m under the first floor and was completely stable. To this tower were bolted standard hoist masts with rack for the two Alimak Scando cages – one for passengers with a capacity of 1800 kg and a size of 1.3 x 3.0 x 2.7 m driven by an operator, one for material, size 1.8 x 3.0 m, capacity 2000 kg with automatic operation.

Once this first stage has been completed after about one year, the whole arrangement will be dismantled, moved to the centre and raised to the 2nd floor. This particular specimen in the long line of Alimak Hoists in operation all over the world, will give many millions of visitors each year an Eiffel Tower which is lighter, younger and more elegant.
